Ruko vs Potensic: which is the better budget drone brand?

I keep seeing both Ruko and Potensic recommended whenever I research budget drones in the $150-250 range. Which brand is actually better overall? Right now I am torn between the Ruko F11GIM2 and the Potensic ATOM SE. I mainly want something for casual outdoor flying and occasional travel footage. Which one would you pick and why?

Both are solid brands but the Potensic ATOM SE wins for most people. The 245g weight is the key differentiator -- no registration hassle, easy to travel with internationally, and the GPS performance is genuinely impressive at this price point.

The decision really comes down to one question: how important is smooth video to you?

  • Casual flying, travel content, fun shots: Potensic ATOM SE. The EIS is sufficient and the weight advantage is huge.
  • Semi-professional video, real estate shots, smooth cinematic clips: Ruko F11GIM2. The mechanical gimbal produces noticeably smoother footage, especially in light wind.

If you genuinely cannot decide, the ATOM SE is the safer default. It costs less and you can always upgrade later if you find you need the gimbal.

I own both. Here is my honest day-to-day experience with each.

Potensic ATOM SE: This is the drone I grab automatically when I head out. It fits in a jacket pocket with the arms folded, I never worry about registration at parks or travel destinations, and the GPS hold is rock solid. The QuickShot modes are genuinely fun for social media content. I use it probably 80% of the time.

Ruko F11GIM2: This stays home and comes out when I specifically need smooth footage for a project. The 2-axis gimbal eliminates the slight jello effect you sometimes see with EIS-only drones. The extended range is also useful for wide landscape shots. The two included batteries give you a long session without swapping into a bag.

If I could only have one: ATOM SE every time. The portability and weight advantage are practical benefits every single flight. The F11GIM2 is a niche tool for a specific use case.

From a technical angle worth adding to the conversation:

The Potensic ATOM SE uses a newer GPS chipset that in my testing achieves satellite lock 30-60 seconds faster than the Ruko F11GIM2. On short sessions this matters -- you are flying sooner rather than standing around waiting for GPS confirmation.

The ATOM SE app (Potensic GO) is also meaningfully better than the Ruko app in terms of interface responsiveness and reliability. I have had the Ruko app disconnect during a session, which is nerve-wracking when the drone is 300m away. The Potensic app has been more stable in my experience.

Customer support for both brands is roughly equivalent if something goes wrong -- adequate but not outstanding compared to DJI's support. Budget that expectation accordingly.

Having reviewed drones in the budget segment for several years, here is my broader brand assessment going into 2025:

Potensic has become the more consistent brand on build quality and post-launch firmware support. The ATOM platform received multiple software updates in 2024 that improved GPS accuracy and added new QuickShot modes after launch. That kind of continued development is rare under $200 and shows genuine commitment to the product.

Ruko makes capable hardware but their software ecosystem trails behind. Firmware updates are infrequent, and the app has not seen meaningful improvements since launch. The F11GIM2 is a good drone because of its gimbal, not because of software advantages.

My recommendation: if you are on the fence and your primary use case is casual and travel flying, the Potensic ATOM SE is the clear winner on overall package. If you specifically need the best stabilized video for under $250, then the Ruko F11GIM2 is worth the registration cost and extra weight.
