Potensic ATOM SE vs Holy Stone HS720E: which should I buy?

I keep going back and forth between the Potensic ATOM SE (~$140) and the Holy Stone HS720E (~$190). Both have GPS and 4K cameras but the ATOM SE is significantly lighter and cheaper while the HS720E has a longer range and is from an established brand I've heard more about. Which one is actually the better buy for a recreational flyer?

I've tested both drones back-to-back. Here is the honest, detailed comparison:

Potensic ATOM SE:

  • Price: ~$130-$150
  • Weight: 245g -- no FAA registration required for recreational use
  • Camera: 4K with Electronic Image Stabilization
  • Flight time: 28 minutes per battery (spec), 24-26 real-world
  • Range: 800 meters
  • GPS: GPS+GLONASS dual constellation
  • QuickShot modes: Dronie, Orbit, Helix, Rocket (autonomous shots)
  • Follow Me: GPS tracking
  • Folded size: jacket-pocket portable

Holy Stone HS720E:

  • Price: ~$180-$220
  • Weight: 492g -- FAA registration required ($5 one-time)
  • Camera: 4K with Electronic Image Stabilization
  • Flight time: 26 minutes per battery (spec), 20-23 real-world
  • Range: 1000 meters
  • GPS: GPS+GLONASS dual constellation
  • No QuickShot equivalent -- basic follow me and waypoints
  • Folded size: compact but not pocket-portable

Where each model wins:

The ATOM SE wins on: weight/registration freedom, price ($40-70 less), QuickShot creative modes, slightly longer real-world flight time, and folded portability.

The HS720E wins on: control range (1000m vs 800m) and Holy Stone's more widely recognized brand with a larger YouTube tutorial library.

For the vast majority of recreational flyers -- parks, beaches, hiking, travel -- 800 meters is more than enough range. The ATOM SE's registration-free status and QuickShot modes are more practically valuable day-to-day than the extra 200 meters of range.

My recommendation: Potensic ATOM SE for almost everyone. Holy Stone HS720E only if you specifically need 1000-meter range and don't mind registration.

Travel experience with both models:

I flew to Portugal and Italy last year with the Potensic ATOM SE. At 245g, I had zero issues with either country's drone registration requirements for short-term tourist visits. The compact folded size fit in my camera pouch without any extra bag space dedicated to it.

A friend brought an HS720E on the same trip. She had to research the registration requirements for each country specifically because her drone exceeded the sub-250g threshold that simplifies things internationally. Both drones flew fine once we sorted the paperwork, but the ATOM SE's weight was a genuine practical advantage that saved time and stress.

For anyone who travels with a drone more than once or twice a year, the ATOM SE's weight advantage compounds over time into a meaningful quality-of-life difference.

Fair counterpoint: Holy Stone has a significantly larger YouTube presence and user forum community than Potensic. When you're learning a new drone, having dozens of setup tutorials, tips videos, and troubleshooting threads specific to your model is genuinely helpful.

A search for "Holy Stone HS720E" returns hundreds of reviews, tutorial videos, and forum threads. "Potensic ATOM SE" returns fewer, though the quality is still solid. If you're brand new to GPS drones and expect to need hand-holding through the learning curve, Holy Stone's community resources could tip the balance.

That said, the Potensic app is intuitive enough that most people won't need much external help.

Update from OP: went with the ATOM SE six months ago and am very happy. GPS satellite lock consistently under 40 seconds. The Dronie QuickShot mode (drone flies backward and up while keeping you centered in frame) produces footage I would not have been able to capture manually. Flight time is real -- I've consistently hit 25 minutes in calm afternoon conditions. Fits in my jacket chest pocket. Highly recommend for recreational flying.

Decision framework for this exact comparison:

Buy the Potensic ATOM SE if: You value portability, hate paperwork, travel with your drone, want autonomous QuickShot modes, or are budget-conscious within this tier.

Buy the Holy Stone HS720E if: You consistently fly at near-maximum range, want Holy Stone's brand community, registration is no concern, or you already own Holy Stone gear.

The honest bottom line: for 90% of recreational flyers, the ATOM SE delivers more value for less money. The HS720E's range advantage only matters if you're regularly flying to the edge of 800-meter range, which is rare in typical flying locations.
