Potensic vs Holy Stone: which brand offers better value for the price?

I've been comparing drones and keep going back and forth between Potensic and Holy Stone models. They seem similar on paper but the prices vary quite a bit depending on the model. Which brand generally offers better value for the money? Is one significantly better than the other at specific price points? I'm mainly interested in the $100-$200 range.

I've reviewed models from both brands extensively. Here is the honest breakdown by price tier:

Under $100 -- Holy Stone wins

Holy Stone has a larger and more refined budget lineup. The HS110D ($50-65) and HS175D ($80-100) are genuinely good beginner drones with reliable altitude hold, decent cameras, and robust build quality for the price. Potensic's sub-$100 options are decent but Holy Stone's engineering here is more mature.

$100-$200 -- Potensic wins clearly

This is where Potensic pulls decisively ahead. The Potensic ATOM SE (~$130-$150) is arguably the best drone in its price range for several reasons:

  • Weight: 245 grams -- under the FAA 249g registration threshold, so you fly freely
  • GPS+GLONASS dual constellation for faster, more reliable satellite lock
  • 4K camera with EIS (electronic image stabilization)
  • 28-minute flight time per battery on brushless motors
  • 800-meter control range
  • QuickShot autonomous flight modes (Dronie, Orbit, Helix, Rocket)
  • Follow Me GPS tracking mode

Holy Stone's comparable model, the HS720E (~$180-$220), weighs 492 grams (requires FAA registration), has roughly similar video quality, and costs $30-70 more. The ATOM SE wins on every metric that matters at this tier.

$200-$300 -- Neither, buy DJI

At $299, the DJI Mini 2 SE leaves both brands behind with superior video quality, 10km range, and industry-leading reliability. If you're spending $200+, strongly consider DJI.

For the $130-$150 sweet spot, my recommendation is clear:

Adding a traveler's perspective: the weight difference is massive in practice.

The Potensic ATOM SE at 245 grams is under the FAA's 249g recreational registration threshold. This means I can legally fly it at US National Parks without the recreational permit that heavier drones require. I can pack it in a carry-on without worrying about battery restrictions. And internationally, more countries allow sub-250g drones in urban areas where heavier drones are restricted.

Holy Stone's GPS models like the HS720E weigh around 492 grams. That is nearly double. You need FAA registration, you lose National Park access, and you face stricter rules internationally.

For anyone who travels with their drone, the Potensic ATOM SE wins on this criterion alone, before you even consider the performance specs.

From a pure breadth of selection standpoint, Holy Stone wins for the budget end. They have models across $30, $50, $65, $80, $100, $130, and $200 price points. If you need something specific to a tight budget, Holy Stone likely has a model near that price.

Potensic is more deliberate with fewer models that are generally more polished. The ATOM and ATOM SE are their standout products and they've refined them well. But if you need something specifically at $80-$100, Holy Stone has more options.

Bottom line: for sub-$100, browse Holy Stone. For $130+, evaluate Potensic first.

Do both brands honor their warranties properly? I've heard mixed things about after-sales support from Chinese drone brands. Any personal experience with repairs or replacements?

Replying to the warranty question: both brands have genuinely improved their customer support in recent years.

My personal experience with Holy Stone support: replied within 48 hours, sent replacement parts (prop blades and a battery) within 10 business days to Texas. No shipping charge for the warranty replacement.

Potensic support: slightly slower initial response (3-4 days) but very thorough in troubleshooting before escalating to a replacement. They sent a full unit replacement when my first ATOM SE had a GPS module issue.

Neither company is perfect but both are meaningfully better than random white-label drones from brands with no support infrastructure. For the mid-range $130-$150 tier, the Potensic ATOM SE remains the best value I've found.
