Do I need to register my drone with the FAA?

I just bought a Holy Stone HS720E and someone at the park told me I needed to register it with the FAA. I had no idea. Is that actually required? How do I know if my specific drone needs registration, where do I register, how much does it cost, and what happens if I just skip it?

Yes, for your HS720E you absolutely need to register. Here is the complete breakdown of the FAA recreational drone registration rules:

The rule

Any drone weighing 250 grams (0.55 lbs) or more must be registered with the FAA before flying outdoors in the United States. The Holy Stone HS720E weighs approximately 492 grams, so registration is required.

How to register

  1. Go to faadronezone.faa.gov (the official FAA site -- do not use third-party services that charge more)
  2. Create a free account with your email address
  3. Select "Recreational Flyers" registration type
  4. Pay the $5 fee by credit or debit card
  5. Download and save your registration certificate immediately
  6. Your registration number starts with "FA" -- write it on your drone with a permanent marker or place it inside the battery compartment

Registration is valid for 3 years. Renewal is also $5.

Drones that do NOT need registration

Drones weighing under 250g are exempt from registration for recreational use. Examples: DJI Mini 2, DJI Mini 3, Potensic ATOM SE (245g), Holy Stone HS175D (175g).

Penalties for not registering

Civil penalties up to $27,500 and criminal penalties up to $250,000 plus potential imprisonment. Enforcement is rare for recreational pilots, but registering is a $5 one-time process -- just do it.

Other rules that apply regardless of registration

  • Fly below 400 feet altitude
  • Stay within visual line of sight
  • Never fly near airports without authorization (use the LAANC system)
  • Never fly over people or moving vehicles
  • Never fly at night without lights (recreational)

To add practical context: the 249g weight threshold is why so many popular drones are specifically designed to come in just below 250g. Manufacturers know their customers want to avoid registration, so products like the DJI Mini series and Potensic ATOM SE are engineered to land at 245-249g.

Drones that require registration include:

  • Holy Stone HS720E -- 492g
  • Ruko F11GIM2 -- 520g
  • DJI Air 3 -- 740g
  • DJI Mavic 3 series -- 895g
  • Most racing FPV drones

Drones that do NOT require registration:

  • DJI Mini 2 SE -- 249g (exactly at the limit, does not require registration)
  • DJI Mini 3 -- 248g
  • Potensic ATOM SE -- 245g
  • Holy Stone HS175D -- 175g
  • DEERC D20 Mini -- under 100g

This is often one of the most important buying criteria for people who travel frequently or fly in parks where officials may check.

Registration is genuinely quick and painless. Here is the exact process I went through:

  1. Went to faadronezone.faa.gov
  2. Clicked "Register" and created an account with my email (takes 2 minutes)
  3. Selected "Recreational UAS" (Unmanned Aircraft System)
  4. Entered my name, address, and birthdate (must be 13 or older to register)
  5. Paid $5 with a debit card
  6. Downloaded the PDF certificate immediately

The whole process was under 10 minutes. You get a registration number like "FA12345678." Write it in permanent marker on the drone itself -- most people put it inside the battery compartment. You are also supposed to have your registration certificate accessible when flying, so save a photo on your phone.

Tip: after registering, also download the B4UFLY app from the FAA. It shows airspace restrictions in real time based on your location -- essential for knowing where you can and cannot fly.

One important clarification worth adding: one $5 registration covers ALL your drones for 3 years, not one per drone. You get a single registration number and you mark that same number on every drone you own that is over 249g. Very convenient once you understand how the system works.

Also worth noting: if you ever sell or give away a registered drone, the new owner needs their own registration. Your registration number is tied to you personally, not the specific aircraft.

And if you are under 13: have a parent or guardian register on your behalf. The minimum age to register yourself is 13.

A technical note worth clarifying on the 249g threshold: the weight is measured with the battery installed (ready-to-fly configuration), but without any additional payload. So for almost all recreational flyers, you simply weigh the drone with its standard battery and compare to 250g.

Beyond registration, recreational pilots also need to pass the FAA's free TRUST (The Recreational UAS Safety Test) exam. It is an online safety quiz you can complete at an FAA-approved test administrator site in about 30 minutes. Keep a copy of your TRUST completion certificate alongside your registration certificate -- you may be asked to show both.
